Opening Statement
Your Honor,
My name is Trevor, and I stand before you today to address a grave matter of discrimination that my fiancé, Lauren, and I have experienced at the hands of our landlord. This case is brought under the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Lauren has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, a recognized disability under the ADA, and we believe our landlord has engaged in discriminatory, retaliatory, and harassing actions against her due to her condition.
Specifically, our landlord attempted to unlawfully ban Lauren from the property, disregarded the necessity of formal eviction proceedings, and falsely accused her of criminal behavior. These actions not only caused emotional distress but also violated her rights to reasonable accommodation and protection under the law.
We seek justice and redress for the unlawful treatment we have endured and to ensure that such discrimination does not continue.
Thank you.

if im on the lease does this mainly apply to her or both of us
Hi Trevor,
If you are the only one on the lease, the legal protections and responsibilities primarily apply to you. However, since Lauren resides there and her rights are implicated under the ADA and FHA, both of you are affected by the landlord's actions.
Would you like more information on how this impacts your case?

Hi Trevor,
Yes, you can lead the lawsuit for both of you since you are on the lease and Lauren's rights are directly affected. However, having legal representation can greatly improve your chances of success. Would you like more information on finding a suitable attorney in Alabama?

that would take alot of the earnings in court though would it not like say close to * %
Hi Trevor,
It depends on the attorney's fee structure. Some work on a contingency basis, taking a percentage of the settlement, while others charge hourly or flat fees. You may want to negotiate or explore options like pro bono services.

what is the expected reasonable settlement for something like this
Hi Trevor,
The settlement amount can vary widely depending on the specifics of the case. Factors include:
- Severity of discrimination.
- Emotional and psychological impact.
- Evidence strength.
- Comparable case outcomes.
Typical settlements for similar cases may range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. Consulting an attorney can provide a more accurate estimate based on your situation.
