Tenant Harassment Legal Rights

Summary

Under California law, landlords cannot harass or retaliate against tenants for exercising their rights. Contacting SHRA or reporting rent gouging is protected. Altering official documents is unlawful. If SHRA withholds documents, file a Public Records Request. For personal safety, call 911 if in danger, contact Animal Control, and consider a restraining order. Document incidents and seek help from local nonprofits, the Attorney Generals Office, or a civil rights attorney.
