Tenant Rights Violations Nj

Summary

Erins boyfriend signed a lease with two other tenants, later discovering they were all under one lease. Due to unpaid rent by the other tenants, they faced eviction. The landlord illegally locked him out, stole belongings, and cut utilities. In New Jersey, evictions require a court order, and lockouts and utility shutoffs without notice are illegal. Erins boyfriend should seek legal action and contact the Gloucester County Superior Court. Consulting a lawyer is advisable. Free or low-cost legal services are available through South Jersey Legal Services, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, and Rutgers Law School Civil Practice Clinic.

My boyfriend sign a lease to be a roommate with * other tenants, under the impression that each individual was under their own lease. My boyfriend signed the lease and when questions why the other * tenants names were on his lease, he was told not to worry about it. This was his first time renting so he trusted the landlord was honest, but changed the lease and put everyone under * lease. The other * tenants were already in the house. After a month of being there, all * were being evicted because of the other * tenant were late on rent of $*,* without my boyfriend being informed prior to signing the lease. The other * tenants moved out without paying any of their rent, and the landlord tried to make my boyfriend responsible for the rent of the current lease as well as what the other * tenant were past due. The landlord also did not follow the proper eviction process by illegally locking my boyfriend out the home during a mental crisis when he had to be hospitalized, broke into my boyfriend bedroom and stole belongings, including money, he removed fuses to cut electricity off and cut the water off and never cut it back on after being court ordered. He had been evicted because he couldn't pay the past due rent because the landlord stole what he had save, but as there any legal actions that can be taken?
I'm sorry to hear about your boyfriend's situation. It may be possible to take legal action, but I need to know the jurisdiction (state/country) to provide accurate information. Could you please provide that?
